This is the way that it’s supposed to be done. My friend and I argue about this all the time. HE agrees with you that, you should get in way at the back. But, most states’ traffic laws will tell you to go to front, and if everybody allows the next person in, it moves very quick.

The main objective is to keep moving. To accomplish that, every yard of open lane must be used. It’s not realistic to expect everyone to merge as soon as they see a sign indicating the lane is closed ahead. It’s even more unrealistic when other drivers aren’t yielding gaps.
