You are not wrong. The thought of my 16 year old granddaughter who gets a lot of her 'world education' from TikTok, being able to vote strikes fear deep into my heart. They have never worked, paid tax, bills, rent or mortgage to understand life.

Don’t over stretch yourself …but you make a good case for an IQ test for voting

Labour included the policy in their manifesto at the last general election. Labour won that general election. They are now doing what they said they would do. That's democracy. Get over it!

Rubbish. I was politically aware at 16, and had a bunch of A grades.

I was a member of CND at 14. Always been politically aware Pple said the same when they brought in votes for people who weren't landowners, who were women! I remember when they lowered the voting age to 18 (1969) Same comments. There's less stupid 16 yr olds than 70 yr olds!!!

Doesn't seem 2mins ago that I was sat at the gym chatting to a few mates.. I remember saying.. 'I'm not voting Labour, but surely they cant be any worse than the current lot. We have fuck all. We're the bottom of the pile. Not a single one of us much above minimum wage. How can we possibly be any worse off?' How fucking naïve was I !!!

Not sure that @charlie_lawson1 knows how election manifestos work and he's calling other people uninformed. 🤣

You talk here of the 16 year olds not watching current affairs programmes yet we have the boomer generation who do but still voted for Brexit despite its obvious lunacy.

Exactly what I think, Charlie. They're doing this now to deflect from the horrendous news that broke this week.

Bang on Charlie, most 16/18 don’t know what gender they are never mind allow them to vote

If anything, it needs raising to 21, so they can gain some life experience and be able to make better judgements, on real issues. At 16 & 17, they know very little, let's be honest.

My 16 year old daughter is more politically astute than you will ever be. You are gurning because you realise the young people are more politically aware than they ever have been and old right wing has beens like you are petrified.

While they’re at it, have a referendum on a max age of voting too. How about one on only allowing taxpayers to vote? Piss off Charlie. They’re old enough to work, they’re old enough to vote.

Oh Charlie, don’t be scared of the future - 16yr olds didn’t vote for Liz Truss or Brexit our country is like it is because the older generations voted with their racist spectacles on - oops

As a mother of a second year student at university doing a degree in law, politics and international studies. I disagree. My boy knows more about politics, Irish history and real life people, than I do. Infect he has opened my eyes. I truly believe 16 yr olds deserve a vote.

They have a mandate to do it. None of the previous changes in voting age were subject to a referendum. And even idiots demonstrably get to vote.

If you can write down your name, adress and post code in front of an electoral official that should be enough.. If it was up to me over 70’s wouldn’t have the vote. If age makes people as bitter and twisted as you then they shouldn’t get a say..🤷‍♂️

Big Charlie was relaxed about 16 year old Tory members voting for Liz Truss to be PM in 2022 though. Happy days.

It was in the labour manifesto before the election.

We had a referendum Charlie, called a General Election. Labour clearly stated in their manifesto that they would allow 16 year olds to vote. The electorate voted for them and their manifesto. What are you scared of ? I suspect 16 & 17 year olds to be better informed than most !
