The agent’s response? “This is not private property.” Which is a wild thing to say while standing outside a locked residential building you’re trying to get into. He keeps insisting she’s wrong. She doesn’t budge. She finally says, “You aren’t going to get in. I’m not opening the door without a warrant.” Another agent then asks if she can tell him whether the person on his phone is inside. She says, “No.” He then responds, “Can’t tell me that either? Want to keep your criminals in your building?” And she shuts that down by saying, “I want to keep my residents safe.” Which is the exact opposite of what ICE was doing. Because trying to pressure your way into private property, without a judicial warrant, is fishing. It’s hoping someone doesn’t know their rights. And do you know what they hope you don’t realize? If this person was actually some dangerous “worst of the worst” criminal, they love talking about, getting a judge to sign a warrant would be the easiest part of their day. Instead, they show up with no warrant, no legal authority to enter, and try to lie their way inside. Because ICE agents are gambling on the idea that regular people will be too scared to say no.
