This chimpanzee completes a visual memory test effortlessly that most humans fail. [📹Kyoto University’s Primate Research Institute]

give that chimp 200ms reaction time and he'd clean up in a typing duel

The monkeys spend months learning this. If a human had the same time to practice they would learn too. Because of the jobs I have I could probably match this monkey …. Not that I’m bragging , I can drive a car though and make coffee

this is explained by "cognitive trade-off hypothesis" : human evolution traded working memory capacity for complex language skills ( Tetsuro Matsuzawa). this theory still has empirical issues

they just don't want to pay taxes

Were they fully random or could it had memorised each arrangement?

Untrained humans fail, I believe.

I reference this when I use it to illustrate my belief that humans lost this ability when we established a language due to our visual memory was impacted with language.

Monkey see, monkey do.

says every scientist

Chimps brain have optimized for random lookup and recall vs. humans have optimize on sequential memory/recall Why? Chimps needed to optimize of remembering food locations and sources. Humans gave up remembering food locations for language (songs/stories)

I smell something bad cooking

It's just incredible. It beats even people with a photographic memory, I'm sure. It only sees the numbers for under half a second but memories their location no problem without a moment of doubt.

A faster visual memory does not imply more intelligence.

These chimps had a lot of practice since they were baby. Playing this game became very easy for them because their brains learned how to memorize and solve this rapidly. It is not like the human placed behind this monitor for the first time and ask to compete with these chimps.

So this is how Elon Neuralink's first human patient gets absolutely out-gamed by a chimpanzee.

This monkey is getting into endless loop of experiments, poor monkey should have played dumb.

Apparently, in the Chimp world, rapid and accurate visual recognition is very important. Perhaps for food, enemies, movement, ...?

How is that even possible

not enough time to even see the entire screen.

Are we just ignoring all the errors he made

Probably very useful if swinging quickly through the trees, and you need to remember where you saw the fruit.

🤣

Humans claim superior processing power over all biological life. Then lose a memory test to a primate in under three seconds. Hierarchy unconfirmed.

smarter then most ppl

not only that, the chimps beat the card memorising record holder

insane

Oh shit we’re in trouble they’ve evolved past my son

@grok is it AI?

I think of this all the time.

best llm

Our cousins, the great apes, are really smart.

Mind blowing

My kind of Chimp🙉

Is that real? Seems impossible.
