I legitimately don’t get the replies saying the #1 is flexing on the rest or that it’s performative. What’s that say about the rest of the sport? The handshakes before/after matches, with the ref, the opposing coaches? Respect is fake and weak?

I was taught to shake hands before the match and after. Extra handshakes or interactions are not required. There's lots of guys that want to act buddy buddy with you. Maybe they are genuinely nice (this guy seems like he's a happy go lucky Mormon lol) or maybe they are playing head games trying to make you think you're friends so you don't go 100% on them in future matchups. Funny enough the guys that are genuinely nice are usually Mormon and the guys pretending to be nice are usually the dirty wrestlers (try to hurt opponents, fake injuries to stall, etc) I never shook the entire podium's hand after winning a tournament and I can't specifically remember anyone else doing that but my wrestling days were a long time ago. Although this is the NCAA National Championships so maybe extra over the top sportsmanship is more normal and I'm overthinking it

When you are in second BECAUSE 1st was dirty then refusing is the only honorable response. If you're just butthurt you go beat it's totally different

I highly suspect that those defending Caliendo here rarely if ever reached the top of that podium in their lives. They remain focused on their failures in this sport, rather than those benefits they derived. Caliendo hurt himself here infinitely more than he did Mesenbrink.

Herein lies the secret why PSU overtook Iowa as the undisputed kings of college wresting. While one focuses only on results, the other focuses on process AND enjoyment of the sport regardless of outcome thus keeping it all in its proper perspective.
