This person deserves shelter — but they need shelter in Stockton, not San José. This is exactly why I’ve been calling for a statewide fair share framework that mandates each city and county does their part. Our city cannot and will not solve this problem for the entire state. In fact, if this continues, we’ll be forced to do what other cities have done and ban camping outright OR we’ll be sending other jurisdictions a bill for doing their job for them. This isn’t sustainable — and the only person with the power to stop it is Governor Gavin Newsom.
