On December 30, at approximately 9:13 p.m., officers responded to 2818 Shining Willow Terrace in reference to calls about a domestic disturbance. Officers made contact with a 26-year-old black male on the porch outside the house. Officers noticed the male had a visible gun in his pocket and gave commands for the suspect not to touch the gun. The suspect disobeyed the commands, jumped a nearby fence, and ran. Officers prevented the escape by cutting him off. Officers again gave verbal commands to get on the ground and not reach for the gun. The suspect did not comply. As a result, he was tased and at some point, the gun fell out of his pocket. The suspect pulled the taser prongs out and attempted to reach for his gun that was on the ground near him. In response, officers shot the suspect. Officers attempted life saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect was a convicted felon in Florida who was arrested for 14 felonies and seven misdemeanors for charges including Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Battery, Battery Domestic Violence, Resisting an Officer with Violence, Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault on a First Responder, Aggravated Battery, Battery Domestic Battery by Strangulation, along with numerous other charges. The officers involved were not injured and will be on paid administrative leave. As with all officer involved shootings, FDLE will conduct an independent review of the incident, that will be turned over to the State Attorney’s office. Additionally, the Orlando Police Department will conduct its own internal investigation. The officers did have their body worn cameras on during the incident and per policy we will make the body worn camera available to the public within 30 days. This is all the information we are able to release at this time.
