#Bangladesh: India's Reckless Actions Are Worsening the Flood Crisis in Southeast Bangladesh For the first time in generations, Bangladesh's entire southeastern region is facing its worst flooding in history affecting millions of people. The cause? Indian authorities opened the gates of the Dumbur Reservoir in Tripura for the first time in three decades, releasing massive volumes of water into an already rain-soaked region. (Read: Could there have been flooding without India opening the Dumbur Reservoir gates? Perhaps yes, but on a significantly smaller scale. The sudden release of water from the dam has inundated the region to an extent it hasn't experienced in generations. International law obliges India to notify Bangladesh of any actions that could cause significant harm downstream. Yet, India's failure to notify Bangladesh before opening the gates has caused significant distress and damage. Unfortunately, the Dumbur Reservoir is just one of many dams India has built on the rivers that flow into Bangladesh. Of the 54 transboundary rivers shared between the two countries, India has constructed dams on at least 30 of them, with the Farakka Dam being the most infamous for its catastrophic impact on northern Bangladesh. India's unilateral construction of dams and its arbitrary control of water flows have become a constant threat to Bangladesh, causing either drought or flooding downstream. This reckless behavior has devastated millions of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. For example, over 80% of Bangladesh's 20 million small farmers depend on water flowing through these transboundary rivers to grow rice. (Source: By inflicting such widespread damage, India is effectively breaching international law on a regular basis. Here are some of the key obligations that India is failing to uphold: 1) Under Articles 5 and 6 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (1997), upstream and downstream countries have the right to equitably and reasonably utilize shared waters. 2) Article 7 of the 1997 Convention, along with customary international law, obliges upstream countries, like India, to prevent significant harm to downstream nations, such as Bangladesh. 3) The Espoo Convention (1991) and customary international law mandate that upstream countries notify and consult with downstream states before undertaking any activities that could significantly affect shared waters. Yet, India has consistently ignored these obligations and has never acknowledged the rights of Bangladesh and its people under international law. Despite these hostile actions, Indian officials continue to claim that they are friendly neighbors—yet they wonder why Bangladeshis hold such deep resentment against them. Is India truly a friendly neighbor to Bangladesh? Their actions speak louder than their words.

This is not a scene from a war zone, nor is it from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, or Pakistan. The scene you're watching in the video is from Manipur, where the Modi government has unleashed extreme brutality. You can see in the video how bullets are raining down on Manipur. However, the Indian media, which is always busy blaming Pakistan and China, never shows this news. India has become a living hell for minorities, whether in Kashmir or South Indian states, for Sikhs or Muslims who have been living there for generations, or for Dalits. Not only Manipur, but also Nagaland and other southern Indian states are facing extremism and brutality from the Indian government. The cultural, linguistic, and ethnic identities of these states are under threat, and their people are suffering immensely. The government has been suppressing their demands for autonomy and self-determination for decades, and the situation has only worsened in recent years. The people of Nagaland, for example, have been struggling for their rights since the 1950s. They have been demanding independence from India and the establishment of a sovereign state for themselves. However, the Indian government has responded with brute force, including military operations and human rights abuses. As a result, Nagaland has become 2nd most militarized regions in the world after Jammu Kashmir. Similarly, in Manipur, the government has been suppressing the demands of the people for greater autonomy and self-rule. The state has been placed under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which gives the military and the police sweeping powers to arrest, detain, and even kill civilians without any accountability. The people of Manipur have been subjected to extrajudicial killings, torture, and enforced disappearances at the hands of security forces. The situation in southern Indian states is no different. The government has been trying to impose Hindi as the national language and has been suppressing the cultural and linguistic identities of these states. The people have been protesting against this for years, but their voices have been silenced with violence and repression. The Indian government's actions have not only violated the basic human rights of the people in these states, but they have also undermined the very fabric of India's democracy. No one is safe from Hindu extremists. But the world has remained silent on the ongoing atrocities against minorities in India. It's a moment of reflection. It's high time for the international community to take notice of these atrocities and hold the Indian government accountable for its actions. @MuslimLivesMatter أ.د. مـQ8ـواطـن 🎖️ ⚜️🎖️ AMANITO🇧🇪🇫🇷 المرصد IrfanTurkei Official 🩺 د.عبدالله العمادي الهاشمي . Trump did not whisper it. He said it in the Oval Office, cameras rolling, Modi sitting next to him. “I will leave Bangladesh to the Prime Minister.” That was February 2025. Not a slogan. A handover. Jaishankar smiles. Modi can smile while cutting. Doval does not smile for the file. He is not a diplomat and not a politician. He flies with an assignment, closes it, and leaves. He does not do impossible missions. He does missions he intends to finish. Look at China. Doval went to Beijing before BRICS. Pilgrimage routes through Tibet reopened. Border mechanisms moved. Xi came to India. That is what “the assignment is done” looks like. Now look at Dhaka. Doval’s reported message to Tarique Rahman was not ceremonial: visit India or don’t — but will you still be Prime Minister? He will not come twice. The same night Tarique wished Modi on X. Modi replied. Last week Washington said the quiet part again. State Department: no official position on Sheikh Hasina. The Awami League ban is Bangladesh’s business. America will work with whoever holds the chair. Read those two videos together. One is the greeting between Trump and Hasina in 2017. Flags. Smiles. The other is the sentence that matters. Trump leaving Bangladesh to Modi. Washington is not coming to save Hasina. Washington is not coming to save Tarique. Washington already said who owns the neighbourhood. There are claims of ISI and MIT meetings in Dhaka with Jamaat-aligned former military officers. There are claims of a project to break BNP, park Yunus as a figurehead, and drag the state toward an Islamic republic aligned with Pakistan. Those claims need proof. What does not need proof is this: the board is live, the exile is talking from Indian soil, and nobody in Washington will take that file off Delhi’s desk. So, you already know what Washington wants and where it stands. Now, you should also know what India wants. I will not explain what India wants in Bangladesh. Figure that out yourself. But if the calculations now underway are what they appear to be, the next shock in Dhaka will not start with a tweet. It will start with one question: who controls the file Trump already handed over. Hasina is still the pivot. Doval does not fly twice. Clip1: Oval Office, 13 Feb 2025. Clip2: Hasina & Trump, UNGA 2017.
