Inside the Mandelson vetting scandal - a bonus edition of our podcast The State of It • Open warfare between Number 10 and Sir Olly Robbins, who was sacked as perm sec of the foreign office this week • Cat Little, the perm sec at the cabinet office, asked the foreign office for the vetting file weeks ago. Starmer allies claim that Robbins blocked its release • She was eventually given the file on March 25 but felt unable to share it with Starmer because of legal issues. She took extensive advice, both on data protection issues and more broadly issues of whether it would undermine the entire vetting system, which relies on confidentiality and is supposed to be insulated from ministers • She went to Starmer on Tuesday, nearly a month later. He was incandescent and ordered an investigation. Robbins was sacked on Thursday • Extraordinary as it sounds, nobody is now disputing Starmer's claim that Robbins failed to tell ministers. Robbins kept it to himself. • But Robbins' allies are fighting back. They insist he did nothing wrong and say he has been scapegoated. • They argue that the PM put Robbins in an invidious position by announcing Mandelson's appointment before he had even undergone security vetting. • They say he would have been in breach of his obligations as a civil servant if he had informed the PM that Mandelson had failed his initial security vetting. • Will Starmer survive? Labour MPs seem to think he will for now. But it adds yet more fuel to the anger about Starmer's original, catastrophic misjudgement in appointing Mandelson. • Next week will be a blockbuster, with both Starmer and Robbins making public appearances With Patrick Maguire and Lara Spirit

🗣️ "It's quite clear he didn't have the same level of vetting that a civil servant would have had." Sky's Mark Stone thinks there is some doubt about the extent to which Lord Mandelson was vetted for his U.S. ambassador role, based on conversations he has had.

Is Drew Petzing really a better fit as Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator than Mike McDaniel… 🤦‍♂️ “This feels like a really the same move, this doesn’t feel like a change… The fit thing has to be something else, because it’s not based on what he would do for the offense.”

🐶: I saw a LUNÉ say, "I have a theory." They thought that whoever was standing on the far right in our photos would be the one doing the opening. Fuma said he had seen that theory too. At first, it was actually just a coincidence that it kept happening. But once we realized a LUNÉ was really manifesting that theory, we thought, "Why not just play along?" So we intentionally had the member doing the opening stand on the far right in the photos to make it look like the theory was true. But when we took the photo during our Hong Kong rehearsal, I decided not to stand on the far right just to see how everyone would react. So congratulations to that one LUNÉ... or actually, not really, because your theory was wrong. We were just making it seem like you were right. 😂

🚨 WHY WAS CHARLIE KIRK WEARING A DIFFERENT WEDDING RING THE DAY HE WAS ASSASSINATED? This feels very strange. Charlie Kirk was frequently switching between wedding rings. One gold, one black. Some say the black one was just a silicone gym ring, but it clearly looks like a polished metal band… and he was wearing it outside of the gym too. Erica Kirk once specifically mentioned that Charlie wasn’t really a “jewelry guy” So why two wedding rings? And why switch them? Why was Charlie Kirk switching wedding rings right before he was assassinated?
