Once again GED Gunther did not know there were four states that were republics prior to joining the union, they were Texas, Vermont, California the Kingdom of Hawaii - later the Republic of Hawaii prior to becoming a US territory in 1898.

Texas AND Hawaii Gunther… whatever happened to Texas’ official “Enabling Act” which is the official document authorizing statehood? The Texas State Library and Archives Commission maintains a public list of republic era documents that are missing from their holdings, maybe last seen in a 1991 inventory. The state is careful to say that the documents aren’t necessarily stolen, just “missing.” And a few years ago, these tee-shirts were for sale in the Austin Airport.

Actually there are three states that were republics before they were states. VT, TX, and CA.
