I mean it is impossible to prove direct ancestry in paleontology. And H. heidelbergensis is known as “the muddle in the middle” for a reason. But not because “it is disproven” but may represent different other or new species.

Because evolution is not linear. It is the same reason why you have cousins, grandparents, and so on existing all at once. Some populations stay the mostly the same, while others become more derived. Humanity was never the singular goal of evolution, nothing is.

@Visceral9000 They died out, and species more fit replaced them over hundreds and thousands of years. We didn’t come from the great apes, Humans and Apes both evolved from a much older, now extinct ancestor.

For humans it is if you don’t realize hominids include humans as well as apes but there are many different species of birds, dogs, cats, rodents etc that have more closely related ancestors. Species like Neanderthals intermixed with humans also
