"The Remarkable Life of Ibelin" is a 2024 Norwegian documentary directed by Benjamin Ree. It chronicles the life of Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer who passed away at the age of 25 due to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Despite his physical limitations, Mats led a vibrant and impactful life within the online game "World of Warcraft" under the avatar name "Ibelin Redmoore." The film explores how Mats' parents discovered the profound connections and friendships he had formed in the virtual world only after his passing. The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024, where it received both the Audience Award and the Directing Award in the World Cinema Documentary category. Netflix acquired the distribution rights, and the film became available for streaming on October 25, 2024. Critically acclaimed, the film holds a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising its heartfelt portrayal of digital communities and the meaningful relationships formed within them. This man was leveling up friendships, building digital kingdoms, probably leading raids at 3AM with a body that betrayed him but a spirit built different, and his parents were out here acting like he was playing Candy Crush in the dark. A 65-year-old psychologist pulled up like “Yeah, your son helped me through my divorce while playing Apex Legends,” and you’re telling me that’s not real life????

The documentary is so heartbreaking and touching at the same time. Makes me happy to know some of the people I game with. We are good friends even though we have never met in person. Some of the realist people I know.

Online communities and friends can be just as real more even than off line friendships.

I’m glad he didn’t give up

RIP LEGEND

May god bless his soul 💖

Rip champion

@astupple this looks to be an story of parents dismissing their son's passion for gaming only to regret it after he died.
