Buy 2 get 1 free is ambiguous. It never states if you get the next one free, or one of the 2 current ones free. It should say "buy 2 get the 3rd one free", so she has a perfectly valid point.

I worked for the Columbia University campus police for just over 10 years. I was stationed in one of the dorms one day when a female student came to the front desk and asked me if I could help her with a manual can opener to get her can of ravioli open. So I did in like 12 seconds and she acted as if she would if I went back to the stone age & used a lighter to start a fire. Doomed doesn't cover it.

I remember there was confusion about this in Norway during the 90s, so stores started saying "3 for the price of 2" instead. You can laugh at the girl, but her logic isn't wrong. She's reading it as "2 for the price of 1" when the store means "3 for the price of 2"

Young people are fine. The only reason people understand the convention is they've been exposed to it. The wording isn't intuitive and is ambiguous on a plain reading. It would be much more clear to say something like: "Buy 2, Get the 3rd Free" "Buy 2, Get Another Free" "3 for the Price of 2"
