There's no national sense of patriotism. (This is to be distinguished from nationalism, btw.) And it wasn't always this way. Also, we don't want to spend the time, hard work, and huge sums of money to maintain a powerful, Tier I representative democracy. We don't. You want to have an amazing military and, for example, FEMA or the interstate road system or benefits for veterans and seniors? Great. Nothing wrong with that. But it's going to cost you. It's going to cost all of us -- A LOT of money. And it's neat and all talking about how "I wanna' live off the grid" or "I don't need any of that crap," but that's not reality. You are part of the social contract, whether you like it or not. So roll up your sleeves and get ready to write a check. That's how it works.
