Ethiopia’s Duty Free Exports Could Hurt Somalia’s Farmers Ethiopia is gearing up to send duty-free goods to Somalia, flying in fresh stuff like meat, veggies, and fruits, while shipping things like beans, oilseeds, coffee, and red beans by land. Sounds like a great deal for trade, right? But here’s the catch: this could spell big trouble for Somalia’s farmers and economy. See, Ethiopia’s government gives its farmers a boost with subsidies, so their products are super cheap. Meanwhile, Somalia’s government doesn’t do the same for our farmers, and on top of that, local goods get taxed. So, when these duty-free Ethiopian products hit our markets, they’ll likely be way cheaper than what our farmers can offer. That’s a recipe for disaster for Somalia’s agriculture. The only ones winning here seem to be the private companies importing these goods. Our farmers? They’re left struggling, and many could end up in poverty. When people can’t make a living, some might feel forced to leave, adding to illegal migration to places like Europe or the U.S. in search of a better life. Somalis need to speak up and push back against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s corrupted government, which seems to be letting this happen. We can’t let our agriculture industry and the livelihoods of so many take this hit. It’s time to stand up for our farmers and protect our economy!

This is 100% now a land grab, which will devastate farmers, small businesses, local communities to name a few. Farmer should be able to choose when to sell their land if at all.
