After despair and sadness early this week we have great news. Brix is off the O2 chamber, and doing amazing. The fluid has drained from his chest and abdomen. He is hungry and feisty. It’s hard to explain the medical stuff here but as simply put as possible- Brix is on antivirals for FIP- though he doesn’t present correctly for it. Brix is going for an echocardiogram tomorrow for his heart as congenital heart disease is possible. He is still a mystery, but he’s so much better.

I saw this video from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine About Medical Laboratory Scientists: Who they are, what they do, their contribution to health and society, as well as prospects. The fun part of it is the one that says Medical Laboratory Scientists are like detectives. I will also add, see Medical Laboratory Scientists like investigative journalists. This video is so beautiful to watch! I encourage both Medical Laboratory Scientists and prospective MLSs as well as the general public to watch it for knowledge, education and enlightenment! Venom is metabolically expensive to produce (proteins, enzymes, peptides). It takes days to weeks to fully replenish venom glands after a big envenomation. When biting defensively, the snake often just wants you to go away, not to kill and eat you. A quick warning bite without venom is often sufficient and saves the snake its precious venom for actual prey. One thing we must know is that venom delivery is not automatic. The compressor muscles around the venom glands must contract to force venom through the fangs. The snake can choose: 1. No contraction → dry bite 2. Brief/light contraction → small dose 3. Full contraction → maximum envenomation Therefore, the snake can decide whether the animal it wants to bite deserves the venom or not, and how much venom it deserves.
