Oh yeah the State of the Arc podcast is great (just in case you didn't know where this was from). I strongly recommend checking them out, they've covered a ton of Final Fantasy but their breakdown on Xenogears in particular is phenomenal imo.

Thank you!!!

totally nailed it. No game has ever done that to me before after or since.

It truly is a masterpiece of storytelling

the plot twist with cloud's memories is one thing but then you realize that sephiroth was in the north crater THE WHOLE GAME. you were chasing after and talking to Jenova, who took on his form, the whole time.

You’re still chasing after Sephiroth; he’s just using pieces of Jenova + the clones to manifest physically while he uses Reunion to rebuild his actual physical body in the Crater. But it’s still his consciousness and will controlling everything

@VOC_mentaliteit Yes and no. There's still reason to believe that Jenova is still the main villain or that Sephiroth and Jenova had simply become one entity. At the end of the day, Sephiroth was enacting Jenova's will. He was doing the exact same thing Jenova had been doing for centuries.

@VOC_mentaliteit But they haven’t become 1 entity. During the final boss gauntlet, you fight Jenova Synthesis aka Jenova Complete before getting to Sephiroth. There’s also no indication in the lore that Jenova desired to be a God or build a perfect utopia in her image. Those are Sephiroth’s goals

Revelation is going to royally fuck what made this scene so special. They already ruined the twist for everyone in Rebirth.

Me and my brother playing this: "Wait why is that random ass grunt stabbing Sephiro*he takes the helmet off*HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S CLOUD?!" 😔🙏

...

Close, but FFT is the greatest game of all time.

It truly is the greatest story in gaming. Fuck those awful remakes.

And then the remakes ruined it

I just finished ff7 og a week ago, man that story was amazing. It’s all twists and turns the whole time. And then ff7 retrilogy comes and ruins the story 🤦🏽 tifa very early on ruins the twist of nibelheim in the first couple hours of the game by saying something along the lines of “i don’t think that’s what happened” or whatever she said, they introduce this marvel esk timeline mumbo jumbo for 0 reason, a shit ton of mini games for no reason other than to bloat the game to justify splitting the game into 3 separate games just to milk their audience. The retrilogy is just a cash cow. So sad

Favorite game of all time! ☄️🗡️

Final Fantasy 7 is the greatest story ever told. Without doubt, the greatest piece of art — film, book, or game — that I have encountered in this life. A masterpiece.

So peak. Then one of the first scenes in rebirth is Tifa dropping that twist within the first hour of the game. Butchered lmfao

You forgot the reason why cloud was able to do it-he was equipped with a single materia the pre-emptive one.

Podcast needs all the attention in the world, absolutely love it.

Been saying this for years. The greatest gaming spoiler ever isn't Aeris's death. It's the fact that you were playing a mentally broken character being controlled (not manipulated but controlled) by the antagonist the entire time. It is setup and hinted at the entire time, but done in such a beautifully subtle way that nobody playing ever saw the twist coming, but once it hits, so many things click and get put into perspective.

Such a shame they are both purists and despise the Trilogy, oh well

Completely nailed the explanation and the reason it was and still is one of my favorite stories of all time.

Just for REMAKE to ruin everything and make it a Disney multiverse thingy + shitty kingdom hearts story telling

I remember going into FF7 WAY later than I should have back in like 2015 always knowing “it’s the game where Aerith dies” and knowing that twist shocked the world. Then when I got the BIG twist about what’s actually going on I thought “MY GOD, how come nobody talks about THIS?!?”

And then they went overboard with this in Final Fantasy VIII by making the entire playable team an unreliable narrator.

Masterpiece to cod piece

Literature Red Herring 101 spread throughout the entire game. A masterpiece in genius character development, story and plot that got destroyed in remake project.

State of the Arc is fantastic. Their series on FF8 really shines a spotlight on how misunderstood that game is.

This whole backstory, and everything that leads up to finally seeing how it REALLY went down, is genuinely one of my favourite things EVER in gaming

Neither Cloud nor Tifa were reliable witnesses to the events at Nibelheim: Cloud because he got his own memories muddled with Zack's after Hojo's experiments. And Tifa because she remembered Zack for most of the events, but also that somehow Cloud was there and saved her. That last was while she was suffering massive blood loss so she's not entirely sure what happened.

Everyone do, if pay atention to what are playing and seeing in the scenes... But Heck If I wish the remake would have respected that way to tell the story, over spoiling everything that will happen, in the first part of the game. :(

Well, I will always say Final Fantasy seven is definitely the superior and best FF in many ways 10 will always be to my favorite and the best. It was the first it got me into the franchise. And honestly, since then it’s been a mixed bag just my opinion

yeah but the remake is 95% the same

And the fanatic re-shits killed it...

What a journey it was back in the days...

the Remakes could never... 3 games of Kingdom Hearts-style, shonen anime, Saturday Morning Nick Jr. garbage

Beim remake hatte ich das gefühl bis jetzt noch ned

Somebody hasn't played VI or IX if he's called VII the greatest storytelling in a video game
