This is my mindset for a lot of things in comics, to not use Spider-Man for once, X-men is a great example. Nothing but respect for stan lee and jack kirby, but giant size x-men to me is just a vast improvement and laid the groundwork going forward to evolved the Ip

he doesn’t, Larry Houston does

No, not really

@the_spy_wonder That’s 100% true. Change for the sake of change rarely makes a product better. Very often it creates the very mechanism that destroys the thing itself. If you don’t understand this, I’d suggest maybe ruminating on it a little before actually responding again.

@the_spy_wonder But how much constitutes as “changing for change” from the eyes of the reader rather than changing to fit the story the creatives want to tell in their own words and effort? It’s inherently a purist mindset to keep things the way they are simply because YOU want to keep it as is

@timaclaren @the_spy_wonder Just to add to this, the video is talking about more than just how accurate adaptations are or aren't. He's talking about how changes in society and how we view these concepts drives change in adaptation. It's not really talking about change for the sake of it.

@0MEGARANGER @the_spy_wonder Clearly some things need to be adapted. Iron Man was written during the Vietnam War, the movie updated the conflict. But Captain America wakes up further in the future with every iteration because he’s a WWII hero. Namor is an example of change for the sake of it. Among others.

Great video except for using Spider-Man's webs as an example considering the organic thing was reverted so quick 😭

I feel like a lot anime/manga fans really, I mean, REALLY suffer from “original” purism over the recent years, often to the point of detriment of the actual author’s themselves.

Why is this the first time im hearing of an african thor?? And he has an axe?? This character fucking rules

Change is inevitable but it needs to be done with respect for previous versions of it.

Yeah an ai chatbot wrote this opinion for him lol

I definitely agree with this, but on the other hand, I also feel like a lot of the changes adaptations make stems from the adaptation almost being ashamed of being a superhero movie. Like how the MCU makes fun of comic accurate suits, even if they’d look good done correctly

Wow, that’s a lot to think about…

MCU Starlord is a rare better than comic example

hate this so much. I don't care about my faves "being respected" why do people care so much about outside acceptance. It's fiction, they can adapt/evolve how they wish due to simply writer preferences and alternate universes but I despise changing continuities main representation

I 100% agree with the general sentiment, but speaking specifically about comics, the execution is almost always dogshit. Batman as he explained is a great example of adaptation to the times done right. Most other times it's just a character being completely changed for no reason.

If you replace all the parts of a boat is it the same boat teory

Couldn’t have said it better myself, I’m surprised he didn’t mention Frankenstein or the TMNT, since it’s widely known by even some casual followers that the origins of those characters are vastly different from the Universal Monsters and 1987 cartoon everyone knows them as.

@Entergalatic67 My opinion on the video, liked it a lot. Totally agree on new adaptations giving new perspectives based on what we as a society experience today. Great food for thought.

I just want to the writing to be thoughtful and not ass or antithetical often to what the current author is trying to say

When the new generation has their time with the myth:

this guys videos are fire

Oh absolutely agree with that. In the Ultimate Fantastic Four, Brian Michael Bendis evolved their origin to coincide with the elements of Air(Sue), Fire(Jonny), Water(Reed) & Earth(Ben) of our universe but also to survive in the “N-Zone/Negative Zone” of the Ult Universe.

That's why i always said Batman need to evolve and get superpowers or be a standalone character in his own universe without superheroes cause it make no sense for him to Tank punches from Superman

Nations mythology shouldn't be owned by a corporation. Point of myth is to be told and retold, for best version to become the dominant version and then later artists to reflect on it. It is a living process. It's okay to hold on to the version you like aswell.

@OmarHolmon Truth is most of us are not that deep Most just see a cover And if is volume 1 buy it and go on a journey Knowing is not the original story But is it’s the story we love the most And nothing wrong with that

You explain Joseph Campbell's thesis that myths exist in part to teach us about ourselves, and this is true, but literary and commercial fiction are not the same thing. Some renditions are terribly watered down and completely miss the great truths of greater versions. You can watch and enjoy Nolan’s Odyssey, but you’re a total manchild if that version speaks to you. Modern cinema is locked into catering to a 95 average iQ demographic. Good stories reveal deep perennial philosophical truths about reality, about human nature, greater powers, etc. These stories last for centuries, or even millennia in the case of Homer because of their ability do this: look beyond the pop philosophy of the day and reveal something timeless. Nolan’s Odyssey doesn’t do this. Watch the Hurt Locker, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our fathers, even Dunkirk, or so many other great films about the pain of war. Homer is about the GLORY of war.

People think Homer created the story and that's the sad part.

The myth of Sango isn't dead, because the west doesn't know about it doesn't mean it's dead.

You bring8ng8ng up the sango or the "African Thor" keps his name alive so you proves your own statement was incorrect

I appreciate this guy being an actual thinker fresh of breath air

Best creator on Comictok by far

There’s a bit of a difference. They changed the characters within the same generation. Thor was 1000 years ago and brought back to mass audiences in comic form in the 50s-60s and also Thor stayed a Scandinavian white dude… they didn’t take mulan and make her a white male, we be just as pissed if they make Blade into a white dude. Blade is a black man. In 100 years those people can remake blade who they want, but as of now; leave out characters alone

This is sort of why I like Manga more because it's "consistent" enough to where you can go back into chapter 20 from Chapter 102 it still makes sense. Unless your flavor of author loves plotholes and continuity errors.

Sango is not dead. Dude has a whole religion of worshippers

If you remove the meaning. The very essence of what it was, then it is not the story you see out. Thor from MARVEL is deliberately separated and different from the original source. Thor from Marvel is an homage to the original source without replacing it or claiming to be it.

How u sound after awhile....

Batman and the Joker are about the Apollonian and Dionysian spirit. Both have will to power and assert their competing visions of a moral world or an immoral one. Their responses to tragedy reflect that but it is not the core of their myth.

An alternative to changing "the canon" of whatever character is to just create a new character. I want more of that, tbh.
