chrome + spotify + canva is like 4gb ram. the m4 air doesn't even wake up for that workload. what's the actual stress test? 200 chrome tabs, 4k premiere timeline, local llm inference. that's where the fanless design hits the wall.

I think 8gb should be fine. A better question is why are software devs allowing their applications to suck down ram so much now. Amidst ram shortages I find myself asking: Why are the same tasks I did on my computer with 4gb of ram in 2009 now 'requiring' 16gb of ram?

To be fair, 8GB RAM is more than enough for most people in this world. My work laptop only has 8GB of ram and it's just fine. And I do extensive work. 8GB RAM might be a challenge for a gamer though.

Imagine buying an Apple laptop in 2026 that has an old mobile processor while your shitty iPad has a full m5 chip inside but is degraded by the iPadOS experience. I feel like Apple made so many chips they are just tossing them everywhere with zero rhyme or reason. You would be better off buying a MacBook Air M1 because of longevity out performs the a18. Specs prove it. Also they are on sale and if you’re a student you can get one even cheaper.

I don’t really know what their problem is, because even the iPad Air with 8GB RAM and MacBooks with 8GB RAM runs editing, so why would they think the MacBook Neo with 8GB RAM with one of the latest and strongest chip will fail to run editing?

the A18 Pro runs an entire iphone with background apps, widgets, live activities, and a modem simultaneously on like 3 watts. three browser tabs and spotify is literally a tuesday for this chip 🍎

Biggest issue in my mind isn’t the memory allocation of apps, it’s how long Apple will support 8G. We all know that as the OS does more it needs more memory, so will this machine last a full 7-8 years of updates, or will it be orphaned in 4-5 years. Worse still what will performance be like in the future as memory gets consumed by the OS? We will ever be able to take it back an OS if it gets too slow?

Your reaction/behaviour does not make you very likeable. Apart from that, the problem is swapped memory in combination with the rather slow SSD – as this wears out all the faster. If you were familiar with this, you would also notice that the 8GB RAM is unlikely to be sufficient even for the target audience, due to the fact that macOS is very heavily designed for swapped memory.

It will probably be using SSD swap a lot in this kind of scenario which will degrade SSD performance over time but should be good for a few years of school

Lot of Windows folks look at Macs and are worried about running multiple apps without 684 GB of RAM. That's not how Macs work.
