For FY2020 I paid 54k in taxes, while my bank account reflected 118k in income. The reason the tax was so high was because of stock grants from the company I worked for - those are added to W2 box 1. The stock plummeted 8x before the first trading window where I was legally allowed to sell it. I had to sell all shares to cover my IRS debt since the "income" (that I never saw materialize) bumped us into a higher bracket than my employer withheld, so I owed an extra 2% on my salaried income. The loss write-offs saved me maybe $800 owed the next year. Taxation is theft.

Too bad the IRS will just take it from his account without his say so😡
