So they actually patched a different game! Mario 2 was original “Super Mario the lost levels” but they tested and it came back too similar to the original! So they reached out to this studio and they had another game similar so they used that game and patched with more Mario style things! True story!

Super Mario Bros. 2 was a reskin of a completely different game known in Japan as Doki Doki Panic! That’s why it feels so different from other Mario games of its era. Meanwhile, the true sequel to Super Mario Bros. was The Lost Levels, essentially a more difficult extension of the original game. At the time, Nintendo of America considered The Lost Levels too challenging for American Gamernauts, so they opted to release the Doki Doki Panic adaptation instead. Little did they know, years later, American Gamernauts would go on to embrace brutally difficult games like the Dark Souls series, something that probably would have surprised Nintendo back then, given how cautious they were about difficulty levels.

It feels off like that because it was originally supposed to be Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 but they rebranded it Super Mario 2 and just changed a couple of the sprites and released it on the NES.

Because originally it wasn't a mario game. It was a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic that was adapted to become s mario game for outside the US. The original intent wasn't mario at all.
