I loathe this scene. A woman character is made to sit there passive, confused, defenceless, no voice of her own, while a man uses violence to ‘defend’ her. It explains a biological prcoess but challenges nothing about the patriarchy or rape culture; it actually reinforces them.

Yes. Unfortunately the men we're attempting to communicate to have a skills deficit in centering women. This is a man who understands, explaining in Mannish, to another man. We already understand. You aren't wrong. It is an imperfect model for an imperfect audience.

I see it as a profound revelation for her, that her inaction was survival instinct, NOT a failure to defend herself. A man had the same response, even though he knew, intellectually, that he wasn’t going to be killed. She had actually been in fear for her life.
