On June 19, the last building in the Akbarnagar locality of Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow, was razed to the ground. The 24.5-acre plot, which housed 1,800 structures including 1,169 houses and 101 commercial establishments including places of worship, was completely demolished as a demolition drive that began in December last year came to an end. Most of the demolished houses and properties belonged to Muslims. Displaced residents allege that the top courts in the country did not protect them by halting the demolition.
