I think i understood it at the time. Particularly about the bomb. Growing up in the 70s and 80s there was always the fear of Nuclear War in Russia. It started in the 50s and 60s and it was sort of second gen paranoia but it was just a thing you accepted-but you thought about it fairly regularly. The kids of the 90s and beyond can’t really relate.

I wish I hadn't understood it in 1984 when I was 13 years old. Living 2 streets away from a naval base that was on the target list should the nukes start flying, was a shocking realisation. The older I'v got the more thankful I am that Putins not the mad man he's made out to be.
