They could have installed clerestory windows on the perimeter. High enough for privacy and security but allows much more light. There's a house in my neighborhood that did exactly that. The street facing side only has clerestory windows.

Houses with well designed private courtyards are such a cool feature. Not easy to do though, and most people don't want them.

I can only imagine what a hassle the gardening of these little spots is. You have to move the lawnmover through the house, grass everywhere...

Love the privacy. But no windows means no open air ventilation. Without fresh air, this is not ideal. Would be very stuffy and have stale air.
