The rains have started, and Nairobi is now experiencing heavy rainfall. Unfortunately, some parts of the city are already facing flooding, largely caused by blocked drainage systems. Many residents dispose of waste into these drains, leading to blockages, while in other cases, illegal construction has taken place on top of drainage lines. My message to the people of Nairobi is simple: let us all be responsible citizens. Proper waste disposal and respecting public infrastructure are key to preventing floods and protecting lives and property. The Nairobi County Government is working round the clock to unclog these drainage systems. We are also collaborating with KURA and KeNHA to ensure that major roads and highways remain passable by clearing blocked drains. As we continue with these interventions, I urge all Nairobi residents to: Avoid dumping waste into drainage systems. Report illegal constructions and blockages to the County. Exercise caution during heavy rains, especially near flooded areas.

Blocked drainage systems are a result of illegal dumping, and the time has come for all of us to adopt the right mindset. We must stop the unnecessary dumping of waste and take full responsibility for the waste we generate at the source. We will take legal action against anyone found engaging in illegal dumping. Let’s work together to keep our city clean and free from blocked drainages.

The rains have started, and we urge all motorists driving within Nairobi County to exercise extra caution. We are putting all hawkers on notice, especially those operating within the CBD and irresponsibly dumping waste particularly tea and coffee hawkers. Their careless disposal of garbage is blocking our stormwater drainage systems, which is a major cause of flooding in the city whenever it rains. Developers and all residents are reminded to strictly follow the law and avoid encroaching on drainage channels. All illegal structures constructed on top of or along drainage systems will be removed. We are committed to restoring order in Nairobi. We are also warning those who have encroached along riverbanks and riparian zones move away immediately before you are swept away by the floods. We shall move in and demolish all illegal structures along riparian areas. These zones are not meant for settlement or construction and must be protected. These decisions may not be popular, but they are necessary. Fixing our drainage system is not just about today it’s about building a better, safer city for tomorrow. One day, you will celebrate the work we are doing to make Nairobi cleaner, safer, and more resilient.

Today, while in Nairobi South C, a resident approached me with a complaint about a neighbour who had allegedly diverted raw sewage into the stormwater drainage system. The resident explained that the situation becomes even worse when it rains, as the sewage overflows onto the roads. At the time of my visit, raw sewage was visibly flowing into the drainage system, creating an unbearable stench and posing a serious public health and environmental risk. I immediately engaged the Nairobi Water and Environment teams and directed them to take urgent action. Anyone found illegally directing raw sewage into the stormwater drainage system must be held accountable. We cannot allow such irresponsible actions to endanger the health of residents, pollute our environment, and compromise our drainage infrastructure. Appropriate action must be taken to stop this immediately.

We cannot allow a few individuals in Eastleigh to conduct business in the wrong places at the expense of public order and safety. At the moment, accessing a shop or doing business in Eastleigh is a nightmare anyone driving into the area can take not less than five hours due to the congestion. This is unacceptable. Hawkers are now operating on the actual road, blocking access to the extent that residents cannot even receive emergency services- ambulances and fire engines are unable to reach patients or respond to emergencies along Jam Street because of hawkers and private cars obstructing the way. On top of this, garbage has been carelessly dumped into stormwater drainage systems, making our work even more difficult and worsening the health risks in the area. Today, I issued notices directing all those operating on the actual road to vacate immediately, failure to which strict enforcement action will follow. Shop owners who have extended their products onto road reserves will also face consequences, as this interferes with the free movement of people. Today, I issued notices directing all those operating on road reserves to vacate immediately, failure to which strict enforcement action will follow. Notices were also issued to those engaged in illegal dumping and to individuals who have constructed houses blocking drainage systems. Shop owners who have extended their products onto road reserves will likewise face consequences, as this interferes with the free movement of people. A time has come when we must make some unpopular decisions to achieve the desired results. I am going to camp in Eastleigh to ensure compliance and will not hesitate to arrest both landlords and business operators involved in illegal dumping, despite having previously been served with notices to stop. Order must be restored in Eastleigh.

During our monitoring patrol to Ikorodu today, three individuals were arrested for tampering with drainage infrastructure. Let me reiterate that interference with drainage channels is a serious environmental offence. Such actions obstruct the free flow of storm water and increase the risk of flooding within our communities. The suspects will be charged accordingly. We will continue to enforce environmental laws across the State to protect our drainage systems and safeguard lives and property. #ZeroToleranceLagos

Earlier today, we received a report that a woman identified as Mrs. McCarthy, of No. 56 Adaranijo Street, Pedro, Shomolu, allegedly encouraged her child to dispose of refuse into a covered drainage channel. Following the report, our enforcement officers promptly carried out an investigation, which led to her arrest for violating the State’s environmental laws. We expect every resident to act responsibly and to educate their children on the importance of protecting public infrastructure, particularly drainage systems. Encouraging acts that contribute to blocked drains and environmental degradation is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. A clean, safe, and flood-resilient environment is a shared responsibility. We urge all residents to dispose of waste properly and support the collective effort to keep Lagos clean. #ZeroToleranceLagos

We have noted with great concern the rapid increase of tea and coffee hawkers in the CBD who are using disposable cups and single-use plastic bags. Most of them do not carry litter bins to manage waste after their customers consume their products. As a result, this waste is being dumped all over the CBD and eventually ends up in our drainage systems during rains, contributing to flooding in the city. We have launched an operation targeting these hawkers, who will now be required to operate like any other hawkers, strictly within designated areas(back lanes). Additionally, we are tracking down those supplying them with single-use plastic bags and will take legal action against them. We must do everything necessary to restore order and cleanliness in our CBD

Today in Eastleigh, Kamukunji Constituency, we arrested several vendors, including barbershop operators and small hotel owners, who have been illegally dumping their waste on the roads, blocking almost half of the roadway. It was evident from the heaps of waste scattered all over, and further investigations revealed that they had also blocked the entire drainage system with their garbage. They will be arraigned in court tomorrow. We are also issuing a strict warning to the people of Eastleigh. Our office has been receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding environmental pollution, with reports that some landlords are encouraging their tenants to dispose of waste illegally. We shall be closely monitoring the situation and enforcing the law to restore environmental order in the area. Our teams will be camping here both day and night to ensure compliance.

Today’s heavy rainfall put to test our drainage systems in Kampala, and the results are encouraging, although we have not yet achieved our target level of resilience. Areas including Sebana Road, Clock Tower, forest mall, golf course and Allen Road experienced flash floods, but in most of them the water cleared within about seven minutes, compared to past incidents where flooding would last for hours or days and disrupt businesses immensly. This improvement follows recent Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) drainage upgrades, including the construction of 16 crossing culverts along Allen Road and Sebana Road into Nakivubo Channel has increased the city’s capacity to tame storm water. Additional works are ongoing, including longitudinal drainage along Ben Kiwanuka Street and a planned box culvert on Namirembe Road under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project. Two buildings, Totala Business and Qualicell, experienced basement flooding due to drainage challenges internal to them, and the KCCA drainage team has been quickly deployed with suction trucks to support them evacuate the water. As drainage improvement works continue, inconvenience caused by this natural occurrence is regreted. Our call on residents, traders & building owners is to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid blocking drainage channels. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is working to build a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient Kampala.

Earlier today, Mr. John Ehidreme, 56, was arrested for illegally dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu. The Lagos State Government reiterates that indiscriminate waste disposal is a violation of environmental laws, as it obstructs drainage channels, contributes to flooding, and poses significant public health and environmental risks. Residents are urged to dispose of waste responsibly and use only approved waste management facilities. #CleanerLagos

Today, 2 June 2026, KCCA Directorate of Public Health and Environment (DPHE) sealed off three commercial buildings along Ntinda–Kisaasi Road following residents’ complaints and findings that wastewater and sewage were being discharged into a stormwater channel. All businesses in the affected buildings have been closed and will only reopen after the landlords rectify their sewerage and drainage systems to meet required standards. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) DPHE urges all residents, landlords, businesses, and tenants to ensure proper waste management and to refrain from discharging wastewater and sewage into stormwater drains, as this threatens public health and the environment.

Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding. At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety. I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

This afternoon, we commenced the cleaning of McGregor Channel in Obalende as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure a flood-free Lagos. Keeping our drainage channels clear is crucial as we prepare for the rainy season. A clean and efficient drainage system protects lives, property, and infrastructure. I urge all residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal and take ownership of their environment. A cleaner Lagos is a collective responsibility! #CleanerLagos

Today, I visited 1st Avenue Parklands in response to persistent complaints from residents about flooding in the area, Some of the complaints we receive about flooding especially in Parklands stem from some developers who have built directly over the natural river course. By diverting the river into a narrow canal, they have significantly reduced its ability to handle excess rainwater, leading to massive overflows during heavy rains. I witnessed firsthand how rainwater has been flooding homes and spilling over onto roads, making them impassable. It is unfortunate that while some residents place full blame on the government, the root cause of the flooding lies in these constructions that have interfered with natural river flow. As the County Government, we are committed to implementing a permanent solution. This includes restoring natural waterways, improving drainage infrastructure, and taking firm action against non-compliant developments. We must balance urban development with environmental responsibility.

THIS IS IMPUNITY AND IT MUST BE STOPPED! Yesterday, I received a complaint from a company located next to the illegal dumping site along Likoni Road. They reported that after months of peace following the closure of the dumping site when I was serving as the Chief Officer for Environment the illegal activities had resumed. I personally visited the site to confirm the report, and indeed, the dumping has started again. The area is heavily polluted, and the air quality alone is unsafe for human breathing. I will be taking this matter up with the Environment team for immediate action to have the site closed permanently. I will also follow up on the cancellation of licenses for the private waste service providers involved, who are illegally dumping garbage at this site. We cannot allow anyone to disturb Nairobi residents in the name of earning a living. While in office, we had proposed a proper solution to help these groups establish a well-organized Material Recovery Facility, where they can earn decently without polluting the environment. That offer for structured support and full compliance still stands. As the County Government we must ensure all our clients coexist !

We are committed to the complete closure of all illegal dumping sites across Nairobi—we will not relent. This is Bins Road, where some individuals have turned a public walkway into an unauthorized dumping ground. We took action, and we will continue to enforce the necessary measures to ensure full compliance and restore order. Nairobi must remain clean, safe, and livable for all.
