programmable elevator shafts between layers sounds like it could scratch that same itch as setting up conveyor systems in factorio. the vertical aspect is what gets me tho, digging deeper into something unknown adds so much tension to the automation loop

Programmable elevator shafts is a great hook. Vertical layers force you to think about logistics in a way a flat map never does, and digging toward something you don't understand yet is a strong pull on its own.
