Extreme heat kills more Americans than any other weather-related hazard. In Phoenix, heat kills more people than homicides each year. So the city is turning to an unlikely lifesaver: bags of ice. And the fire department is creating a new model in the battle against heatstroke. Ben Tracy with Climate Central has more on how this low-tech approach is saving lives.

Minnesota, this may be the longest stretch of heat in about 3 years - and it’s not just the daytime highs that matter. The combo of heat, humidity, and warm nights can take a toll quickly on older adults, kids, outdoor workers, pets, and anyone without reliable A/C. Save this, share it, and check on those around you! #mnwx #MinnesotaWeather #TwinCities #HeatSafety #Heatwave

A record-breaking heat wave is intensifying across much of the central and eastern U.S., pushing temperatures to what officials are calling "dangerous" levels. More than 200 million Americans were under alerts on Tuesday for extreme heat. Temperatures felt well above 100 degrees across much of the Midwest. And soon, that same sweltering heat will peak in places like New York. As we look ahead to the July 4 weekend, forecasters say that, starting Wednesday, it's going to get worse before it gets better for large portions of the Midwest, including Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit. The "heat dome," as it's known, shifts east by the end of the week, threatening record temperatures across New York, much of the Mid-Atlantic and even New England.

UV radiation and heat both come from the sun, but they're not the same. UV is invisible and can be high even when it's not hot. UV peaks around midday, before peak temperatures. Don't rely on how hot it feels. Check the UV Index and protect yourself. #BeatTheHeat ☀️

☀️ The forecast is heating up. Temperatures are already high and expected to climb. Stay safe in the heat: ➡️ Drink plenty of water and hydrate before heading outside. ➡️ Take regular breaks in a cool or shaded area. ➡️ Check on children, older adults, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. If someone is showing signs of heat illness, take it seriously and act quickly. Stay cool, California. #CALFIRE #HeatSafety #HeatAwareness #StayCool #StaySafe
