I thank the New York City Bar Association New York City Bar for this important recognition. At a time where conflict related deaths are on its record high, where we see a significant set back of decades of progress in democracies, SDG 5: gender equality far far away from its target line, I still think that today is a great chance to disseminate the best practices of women human rights defender, activists, civil society pioneers and peace makers. We will all continue combat state-led atrocity crimes, lead intergovernmental actions for the release of political prisoners and work towards ending gender-apartheid regimes. I will end with this UN Women’s motto for this year: invest in women, accelerate the progress of peace and security. #InvestingInWomen #March2024

One amendment argued for extra criminalisation of sexual harassment at work. BUT, the wording used is 'people of different GENDER identities including women & girls'. I have always been a firm advocate for women's inclusion in governance and decision-making. My commitment to gender equality is unwavering because I believe that a society thrives when women are actively involved in shaping policies and leading initiatives. It is imperative that we take legislative action to secure women's participation in politics. One of the key steps toward this goal is mandating that party delegate selections include women, this is not just about fairness; it is about ensuring that the voices of half our population are heard in leadership spaces. Beyond policy discussions, I have consistently highlighted the challenges women face within governmental structures. Many women in leadership positions hesitate to speak up, often out of fear or societal pressure. This must change. We need structural reforms, including the creation of special seats for women and the enforcement of laws that guarantee at least 35% representation in governance. We must break down entrenched gender stereotypes and cultural barriers that have kept women on the sidelines for too long. At the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), global leaders—including UN Secretary-General António Guterres—reaffirmed the need for more women in leadership. The UN has made significant strides in achieving gender parity among senior leadership by expanding the search for qualified women, proving that when given the opportunity, women lead with excellence and impact. My participation in the Nigeria Women’s Day event at CSW69 is yet another step in my relentless advocacy for gender equality. The fight for inclusion is not just about women—it is about building a more just and prosperous society for all. At the #UNGA80 side event, I raised my voice for the Afghan people, especially women and girls, who have been systematically erased from public life under more than 70 [now documented as over 130+] Taliban edicts. Stripped of education, work, mobility, and basic freedoms, their reality is nothing short of gender apartheid. I stressed that disasters like the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan only deepen this repression, showing that climate and environmental crises are never gender neutral! Afghan women bear the heaviest burden. I called for global recognition of this injustice, urgent accountability, justice for victims, and stronger support for women led solutions that can keep hope alive. As UN Secretary General António Guterres reminded us, the UN General Assembly must not only be a place for speeches but a place for action. For four years, Afghan women have heard statements of solidarity but seen little change on the ground. I hope this time our voices are not only heard but acted upon that commitments made in these halls finally translate into justice, accountability, and the restoration of Afghan women’s rights. As this year’s Assembly is led by President Annalena Baerbock Parody Annalena Baerbock , it is inspiring to witness female leadership at the heart of the UNGA. For Afghan women, this carries profound meaning, we hope that women leaders around the world will recognize the reality of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, understand its urgency, and take decisive action to hold the Taliban accountable. Meanwhile the Taliban have banned girls from schools, women can't work, travel alone, get proper healthcare, or even speak freely. Gender discrimination at its worst. An advocacy orgaisation Women For Change and some political parties have called for the singer to be barred from the country due to his history of abuse and a gender-based-violence conviction. But trans people in the UK already have the same human rights as everyone else. What activists like Polanski are really demanding is not equal rights, but special treatment: the right for men who say they are women to access women’s spaces and for anyone who objects to be denounced as hateful. When he calls for an end to “hate”, women know by now what that often means in practice: being shamed or silenced for not wanting to undress or deal with other intimate situations in front of men.
