This Iowa touchdown was called off because officials ruled the returner signaled for a fair catch.

I believe the rule states that the player must wave his arm in a motion above his head to signal for a fair catch. Why can't he point to his players to stay away from the ball? I just can't see where he actually was calling for a fair catch.

The rules clearly say if a player is waving his arm whether is arm is above his head or not the ball can not be advanced, he was obviously waving his arm, did it three times.

David you are factually incorrect. The refs did not rule that he signaled for a fair catch. They ruled that he moved his hand in a way that violated the invalid fair catch rule. Gotta keep up.

I agree with the call. He was clearly waving his arm and he very likely stepped out of bounds on the return anyway. The rule is for the safety of the player otherwise players would try to trick the defenders. This would escalate to defenders leveling vulnerable players.

The returner stepped out of bounds so even if he didn’t signal a fair catch, the play should have been ruled dead where he stepped out of bounds.

This video angle does not reveal the runner stepping out of bounds. The runner confused the defense with the hand waving. None of the potential tacklers made attempts to tackle the guy with the ball. They apparently thought a fair catch was called for.
