Anyone can wipe an iPhone with Apple's own app. You don't need to go to any store to do it. And how would the store validate ownership anyway? You just can't bypass the PIN lock

So hypothetically speaking if I happen to find a random locked iPhone somehow I can take it to Apple and they can remove the lock for me? ๐Ÿค”

Apple cannot break, bypass, or retrieve a forgotten screen passcode, even in an Apple Store. Data is encrypted with a hardware key tied directly to your screen passcode through the Secure Enclave. Apple does not hold a master key or backdoor.

Something doesnโ€™t add up. If the iPhone is linked to an account, then you canโ€™t just unlink it. He mentioned it would be harder if you forgot your Apple ID and passcode at the end. Iโ€™m guessing he had to put that information in

Normally, you mark a lost or stolen iPhone as lost in โ€˜Find Myโ€™, which has Activation Lock enabled. You can ask an Apple Store to factory reset it, or do it yourself at home, but to remove Activation Lock, you need the original ownerโ€™s Apple ID or a valid proof of purchase.

What if itโ€™s not his phone?

He was able to restore and unlock the phone because the customer said it was not logged in to his Apple ID. If it was, it wouldโ€™ve been a different story. He would need to bring a proof (receipt) that he purchased the phone.

If you forgot the Apple ID password, I donโ€™t think this can be done

Dude, your iPhone 8 isnโ€™t worth this kind of effort. Ask them if you can upgrade and buy a renewed iPhone 12.

How could they do that without knowing if he owns that phone?

If find my is on and the phone is restored you would have to know the Apple ID and password otherwise the phone will be bricked until you get that info. If find my was not on there would be no problem setting up again after a restore.
