This is ableist and unacceptable BYU–Hawaii. From a devotional delivered this week by David Glen Hatch. (Not a general authority, though he's quoting the late Elder Neal A. Maxwell.) Much of Hatch's delivery runs directly counter to President Nelson's call to end contention.

He's apparently quoting from an obscure YA fireside from 1979 before Maxwell became an apostle.

And here's the full video.

@byuhawaii I literally just gasped. WTF.

@byuhawaii I hate how he equates “liberal Jesus” to satan. That certainly doesn’t jive with my understanding of the compassionate Jesus in the BOM and New Testament.

@byuhawaii Yup. I became "liberalized" by Jesus in the New Testament so

@byuhawaii Shame on you @byuhawaii and @Ch_JesusChrist for inviting this man to speak. Not only did he just completely run counter to Pres. Nelson's call to end contention, he referred to those suffering from physical disabilities as "ugly." Not remotely Christlike.

@byuhawaii Not to mention the misogyny of having the example be a woman whose value is lessened by her horrific exterior appearance. Sure, he mentions men, but the quote really focuses on a woman's worth as defined by the male gaze. Ick all around

@byuhawaii This looks like it was filmed in the 70s, but that’s an awful lot of hate filled rhetoric for the hippy filled 70s

@byuhawaii Remarkably it was this week

@byuhawaii @LifeOnaPlate it's also misogynistic! As someone that works in mental health care I would also say it's very ignorant of the toll of mental and emotional struggle and trauma. Sheesh🙄
