This is why the best toy for a kitten is another kitten. They’re evenly matched and not very strong so they can beat on each other and teach each other about biting and scratching without doing too much damage. Absent a fellow kitten, I found a young patient adult male cat will “pull its punches” to play with a kitten, and if the kitten gets too rambunctious, the big guy will simply pin him down and give him a bath. Or move out of reach. Finally, whenever one of the cats does bite too hard or scratch me while playing, I’ve found going completely limp but very loudly saying “OUCH!” usually cause the cat to pause, settle down, and maybe give me a few licks.

Heh I did this to train my rabbit. When she was going through her moody teenager phase. She didn't realise that it hurt us big buggers. So I squeaked like a bunny kit, then would do unhappy stomps.

This works with dogs too. I would play with my dog as a puppy and then stop/exaggerate my reaction when I got nipped (not much over reaction needed because those puppy teeth are like razors lol). He figured out fast that he needed to be gentle if he wanted to play.

Brother thought I was smoking crack, when I got his cat to stop biting so hard. I didn't flick, choke or slap the cat — as so many suggested. 🙄 I just mimicked a "ow" and loud squeak, by the end of the week — his chonky kitty stopped biting like a pitbull. 😅
