So we've seen EV's catching fire while sitting at the curb. But you need to stage a 90mph t-bone crash to get an ICV to catch fire, where no one would survive anyway. Totally the same thing...

Mechanical or electrical failures cause the large majority; collisions account for only around 5% of the fires. Roughly 14% occur in parking areas. ICE vehicles routinely catch fire while parked or stationary from fuel leaks, wiring faults, or other failures—Hyundai/Kia alone have issued multiple “park outside” recalls covering millions of vehicles for this reason. Available comparative data (Sweden, Tesla fleet) show ICE fire rates substantially higher than EVs.

EVs catch fire far less often. Tesla data (2012–2023): 1 fire per 135 million miles traveled vs the US average of 1 per 17 million. Sweden’s national figures show ICE vehicles roughly 20× higher fire rates per registered vehicle than EVs/hybrids. NFPA states there is no evidence EVs are more likely to ignite; ICE fires still dominate US responses.

After a crash at 110mph, the Cybertruck battery never caught fire and the screen never cracked. Insane

Gas cars were designed to be around gas cars. Meaning light weight cars weighing 1.5 tonnes mostly. Today's EV's weigh nearly 3+ tonnes and that extra 1+ tonne of weight is the real killer. No amount of safety features will save you if you get hit by a 3 tonne EV with its inertia will plough through the gas car leading to the explosion.

Yes, the lowest volume vehicle Tesla sells today is about that weight, but Model 3 and model Y are not, they are the bulk of EVs on the road today.

I don't know of a carload of gas cars sinking a ship. I think EVs can now paint two 🚢 🚢 on their cowlings today. Plus a Korean parking garage. The last notorious pickup collision story was years ago when one of the major media outlets tried to do an expose on the Chevy trucks with "side saddle" gas tanks. The test was found to be rigged to guarantee a fire.

US averages ~550 highway vehicle fires daily, nearly all gas/diesel. Full list not possible as most stay local. Examples since Monday: July 27 vehicle fire on I-15 Utah (spread to vegetation); July 29 fatal car fire after crash in Kansas City KS; Mercedes Vito caught fire while driving in Leipzig; multiple cars burned in Hackensack NJ after transformer blow. Traffic scanners report more hourly.

I’m assuming the fireball was theatrical. Cody has a tendency for doing wild things.

The source data is straight from the NTSB, they just summarized the data in a nice chart

Ntsb doesn't release such data. NTSB does have data for fires that occured specifically within highway fatalities. AutoinsuranceEZ used it to make their own "per 100K sales" chart, but it gets shared as if it represents fleet-wide fire data. interestingly, in the NTSB data, hybrids have the lowest fire risk in fatal accidents.

It’s replicated in official studies around the world, including most notably outside of this one, Sweden’s study that shows gas 20x more likely to catch fire. The reason for their metric per 100k sales is to help rationalize the number as a volume of annual sales. Example, 200k gas fires doesn’t tell you much about the wide spread impact…but 1,529 per 100k does. Theres countless studies on this, and every year it becomes even clearer. Example, this study with 2024-2025 data from NHTSA shows EVs travel over 7 million miles per fire while gas vehicles travel only 18k miles per fire.

One fire every 18K miles? @grok estimates 3 trillion miles are driven each yr in the US. If there are 200K fires, that's one fire for every 15M miles driven. Ppl average 12K miles a year. If there's a gas car fire every 18K miles, then people should be averaging a fire in their vehicle every couple years. I doubt that's the case

Your math is solid. US drivers log ~3.3 trillion miles a year. NFPA data shows ~200k highway vehicle fires annually, or one fire every ~16-17 million miles. The circulating 18k-mile claim has no NHTSA backing and would require hundreds of millions of fires yearly—orders of magnitude off reality.

My biggest take away was the minimal impact of the cabin area of the CyberTruck. The crumple zone in the front of the truck did its job perfectly absorbing the impact at a 110mph collision.

But how much more likely are gassers to catch fire than Teslas: 600 times? The statistics for generic EV’s rate of fire involvement are skewed by the pyro proclivities of NTEVs, who’s designers -in their hubris- ignored the fire safe battery pack design that Tesla shared with the world and instead went with pouch cells vulnerable to thermal runaway

The CT takes quite a distance to stop after the impact. The intrusion into the passenger cell looks survivable. Not injury-free by any means, but with working air bags, decelerations maybe in a survivable range. @grok, estimate the forces a human body would experience in the driver’s seat of the Cyberbtruck during the 110mph impact with an F150 in Whistlindiesel’s most recent video “Cybertruck Durability Test 3.”

Rough estimate based on physics and the observed outcome: 111 mph CT into stationary F150 (T-bone) is roughly equivalent in energy/momentum transfer to a 45-50 mph rigid-barrier frontal for the CT. With the cabin largely intact and the truck continuing some distance afterward, peak vehicle decelerations were likely in the 30-60 g range during the ~100-200 ms crush phase. Modern belts + airbags would load-limit the driver to roughly 20-50 g on the chest/torso (head higher momentarily). That is severe—expect fractures, soft-tissue damage, possible concussion—but within the survivable window for a restrained adult if the restraints function. Unrestrained would be far higher and almost certainly fatal.

I was blown away the CT never caught fire during any test.

The issue is gas is easily extinguished and every fire house in America is outfitted for that. Ev’s burn hotter, longer, and there isn’t a consensus on the best way to put them out.

I know some people don't agree with Cody's methods, but it was pure cinema! All 3 episodes were truly epic or incredibly wasteful and idiotic depending on your perspective. I only wish Cody would do the test again, but order the body armor kit for the rock climbing instead of the full self driving which he never even used once on the vehicle he purchased. Also do a durability test of the Ford Lightning vs Chevy Electric truck.

100% you can see the gas tank on that f150 rupture and ignite. If the Cybertruck had people in it its likely they could have survived and not burned to death. Was pretty awesome to see how well the Cybertruck did in that! 112mph hitting a f150 broadside!
