I love cats. They’re so cute. But as much as I love them, they can make my lungs close up. The reaction can happen immediately or hours later. I’ve had asthma attacks where my inhaler and nebulizer didn’t help, allergy meds didn’t work—and if I survive the attack, I can end up with bronchitis and a brain-smashing cough that lasts for months. I can’t explain how scary it is to feel like you’re breathing through a tiny hole in a plastic bag for hours, not knowing if the hole will close completely and you’ll just stop breathing. Websites get sued for not being accessible to people with visible disabilities, and stores try to be accessible to handicaps like wheelchair users—and rightfully so—but those of us with invisible disabilities have almost no protection. Fragrances at store entrances, smokers outside buildings—even hospitals. I’ve left the ER after an asthma attack only to walk through a cloud of smoke. I’ve sat in medical offices, even pulmonology clinics, where the receptionist is wearing perfume. And when COVID hit, they sprayed disinfectants everywhere, all the time. I didn’t get sick from the virus—I got sick from the chemicals. Constantly. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation doesn’t really advocate for people like me, and most people don’t understand or care. But this is what it’s like to live with an invisible disability. Maybe I’m part of the first generation with this kind of hypersensitive immune system—but I know I’m not the last. While I love cats and have two lying on the bed with me, they should never be taken out into public spaces unless in a carrier. An unexpected event could occur and scare them causing a flight response. Safety for your pets must always be the overriding concern, not cute videos.
