This is an excellent example of a more experienced hunter. Everything from the beautiful descent to the way the bird snatches the fish right off the surface to the cute little tail wag at the end. This female Osprey has mastered her ability to catch a fish.

I see these guys fishing alongside with me all the time (even on certain lakes and streams, not just the ocean) and I love it every time. I mean, I’m pissed they’re catching more than me but they make it look so cool…

I never grow tired of watching these birds do what they do best, catch fish. The amount of effort that goes into one single catch is immeasurable. From soaring through the air, to submerging themselves in a foreign underwater world to floating on the surface with an injured fish in its talons. I’ve always wondered: do sharks ever cruise up, see the chaos, and go, “Thanks for the delivery,” before snatching a two-course meal of fish and bird? Luckily for this Osprey, not today. Today, it yanked a pompano straight from its home and took to the skies with Florida’s glittering coastline as its victory lap. Glad I’m not a fish. Glad I’m not a pompano.

Adult eagles have mastered the art of plucking a fish from the water’s surface. I don’t think they like to get wet because they put forth so much effort in avoiding it. Pay close attention to this one’s talons as it passes the fish to its beak. It opens them one at a time and slides that poor fish right on out. Glad I’m not a fish.

I think the local ospreys are always trying to outdo each other and when it comes to amazing fish to yank from the ocean, the ribbon fish is high on the list of rarities. I have only seen this a handful of times but every single time I have witnessed an osprey flying around with this prehistoric alien like creature clutched tightly in its talons, the osprey will look down in disbelief at its newly acquired meal and then proceed to parade it around the skies showing off to all the other birds in the area. Easily one of my favorite fish to see them haul away.

Surrounded by gusty gales, massive waves and dozens of hungry pelicans, this young Osprey is fighting to secure its floppy catch, a huge mullet. The sooner the better because advertising a fish this large isn’t a great idea.

With a quick dip into the salty Atlantic, the bird emerged with a very unhappy lizardfish. Of all the fish I’ve seen them catch, lizardfish almost always put up the strongest fight, but the Osprey’s cage of razor sharp talons knows its prisoners well. There is rarely an escapee, and this is just one of many reasons the Osprey is the best at what it does.

Have you ever seen a bald eagle come falling out of the sky at full speed? The Experienced ones can come hurdling out off the sky at speeds of up to 50 mph but they also know how to put on the brakes and gracefully slow down in order to grab a fish from the surface.
