The X post shows a video of the bulging checkerboard illusion, alternating between a flat checkerboard grid and the same grid with small blue and white dots added to squares. • The dots disrupt straight lines in the pattern, causing the brain to interpret slight misalignments as perspective or tilt cues, making the flat surface appear to bulge outward like a 3D dome in the center. • Created by vision scientist Akiyoshi Kitaoka, this illusion demonstrates how the visual system fills in and assumes 3D structure from 2D patterns, with the effect strongest when viewed briefly or from a distance.

Any tips on how to increase bulge are appreciated.

@stu_wit 🤯

I like these ones cuz I don't have kill my visual cortex to see it work.

Is this an online game? Or does a checkerboard like this really exist?

Freaky. I once landed my hanglider onto a perpendicular sand dune that was 100% invisible to me. Take it from me that you do not want unexpected rising ground when you flare. No harm to me - other than pride - or aircraft. These illusions trouble me. Elon, sometimes our eyes are wrong. Would this illusion disappear if we removed our brain (or improved its ability to process what it receives as input)?

Some think that each type of illusion exploits arrangements not found in nature that may indicate that such manipulation improved survival and reproduction in some other fast way.

Seeing is not necesasarly beliving.

Very interesting. Haven’t seen this one before

That is wild

I don’t see shit but a checkerboard lol what’s supposed to happen

It’s really soothing

Well it's bulging when I am seeing for a second if I countinues to see that yes you are right it does get bulging.

Off to get new spectacles.

Sphere!

How our brain gets fooled so easily?

My Ex had a bulging checkbook illusion

すごい

That’s pretty cool. I wonder why that happens - I see the dots, sure, but why does that trick our brain…?

Tatsächlich 🧐

Illusion disappears if you look at your screen from and angle

Ok lol

AMAZING 🤪

Oddly I see convex with all the dots but nothing concave with the corner dots. I note it's flat with no dots.

우와 너무 신기하네요
