Today is day 33 of Senator Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, and based on the continued presence of his U.S. Capitol Police security detail. For those of you who work for the U.S. Capitol Police, the federal government, or the military, the talking points on Capitol Hill are increasingly shifting toward a government shutdown. Both parties are blaming each other, but with Republicans holding a very narrow majority, McConnell’s continued absence raises questions about how leadership plans to navigate the negotiations. So far, there has been little public clarity about when, or if, Senator McConnell is expected to return.

This is the unidentified staffer from Senator Mitch McConnell’s office who was frequently seen wheeling the Senator to the Senate floor for votes. During some past roll call votes in which the Senator was present, the votes themselves occurred off camera. If an elderly senator were ever mentally incapacitated or otherwise unable to make an independent voting decision, my concern is that a staffer could potentially influence or instruct that senator on how to vote. That possibility raises important questions about transparency and safeguards surrounding the voting process.

It is now Day 43 of Senator Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, and I find it unlikely he will return to the Senate to vote tomorrow. This should concern every member of Congress. If a senator falls into a coma after a tragic accident, no family should face public pressure to withdraw life support simply to vacate a Senate seat. Congress should fix this constitutional gap with an amendment that provides a dignified process for prolonged incapacity.

Desperate to cling to a narrative that was just shattered, Sunny Hostin is still insisting that Republicans were the ones who shut down the government and RAGES at Democrats for giving in: "This was a choice by Republicans to cut SNAP benefits! This was a choice by Republicans to cut ACA subsidies! This was a choice by the Republicans to gut the federal government and federal employment! Democrats had nothing to do with it! I want an opposition party! I think the Democrats caved! I think the Democrats let down the American people! (...) Tonight on the Senate floor, I urged my colleagues to support the bipartisan continuing resolution I worked with members of both parties to craft as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. After three unnecessary lapses in funding during the fiscal year 2026 cycle, putting the possibility of yet another harmful government shutdown off the table should be a priority for each and every one of us. This straightforward measure would keep the government funded through December 11, protect vital programs and services, and give Congress additional time to continue our work on bipartisan appropriations bills. A Capitol Hill source sent me a Department of Energy hotline on S.1674, the Mammoth Cave National Park Boundary Adjustment Act of 2025, which is Senator Mitch McConnell’s bill. That raises an obvious question: if Senator McConnell is still at George Washington University Hospital, how did this legislation move forward? Do Senate staff have the authority to advance legislation like this on behalf of a senator? I followed up with Senator Mitch McConnell’s communications director, Stephanie Penn, hoping to get answers and a response to the questions raised in my previous video. Specifically: Where did this legislation come from, and how was it approved if the senator remains hospitalized? Stephanie Penn had no response and walked into Senator Katie Britt’s office.
