I love those old nursery rhymes. Some stories say that the fine lady was actually from the Feinnes family, who are related to actors Ralph and Joseph and also the explorer Ranulph!! Amazing!

Digging out an old memory, Jack Hargreaves maybe. I think a cock horse is a horse lent to a team pulling heavy wagons, as an extra for a long ascent. It would be ridden back by a boy or teen at the end of the day.

When we visited Banbury a few years ago I discovered my son (then late teens) had never heard that rhyme.

he term also means to ride "a-cock-horse," meaning to be seated astride or in an elevated, proud position. Likely an unusual for a lady to ride in this manner at that time?

It's Banbury, they have a very good antiques centre there, under Waitrose if memory serves.

Incredible. My mother used to sing that to me as a child while I sat on her lap.
