Years ago, they had a sports competition between a professional football (UK) team and male ballet dancers. Both teams had to go over an army style obstacle course. The dancers wiped the floor with the footballers. Wasn't even close. Strength, agility, power, speed, endurance.

There’s also the video of Sergei Polunin dancing to Hozier’s Take Me to Church, and it’s astounding. Especially the story behind it- he genuinely thought that would be his final dance performance.

It's a beautiful art that deserves to thrive. But a lot of brilliant traditional art forms do die out, as patronage shrinks. Timothy came across as needlessly disparaging, but there's a bitter truth in what he said. Hopefully the backlash to his comments also brings more money, viewers and young talent to Ballet and the Opera.

Can we stop the bullshit in US abt men’s ballet and esp men’s figure skating? Get a grip. Baryshnikov was the hottest man in the 1970s. So was Nureyev. So was Godunov. I know this is in support of men’s ballet but I’ve never seen so many overcompensating as I have in last 10 yrs.

Some decades ago a dancer or 2 challenged Rugby League footballers to a fitness challenge. Some of the strength aspects of the footballers training was difficult but achieved. The footballers couldn’t deal with the dancers training.
