It only takes about 5 minutes of watching a CED on the SelectaVision before my “friends” start begging me to switch to something more modern. “Please,” they say, “can we watch a LaserDisc instead?” Weak.

My dad was way into home A/V, so naturally I was too. I grew up renting Beta Hi-Fi from The Wherehouse. We had Laserdisc. I can tell you Clear and Present Danger was the first AC-3 release for home audio. WHAT IS THIS FORMAT?! I’m vexed.

Oh man, memories. My dad thought this was the future and got CED instead of videocassette (or laserdisc, which was around). I loved that solid ka-chunk of sliding in the cartridge. No other format ever gave me that tactile delight.

I *just* saw a clip with a guy saying, anyone born after about 2000 is not going to have the experience and memory of wiping an old TV and feeling the electric static on the front of the screen.

I had a visceral reaction to the nostalgia. That video disk player … oh, man

I had this disc player growing up in the early 80s. Only pain in the ass was you had to flip the disc halfway through the movie...just like spinning vinyl.

My parents still have a working one with about 100 movies, including the theatrical releases of the Star Wars trilogy. So much fun to use

Accurate all the way down to the fake wood paneling and the burnt orange shag carpet. I'm so glad I survived that bygone era. Despite growing up with CRTs, I don't miss them. As far as I recall, almost no one really had CED videodiscs. I went from VHS, laserdiscs, DVDs, to BDs.

My father use to rent these from the local library and we would spend all night copying them to VHS tapes. We were hardcore pirates back then. I had my first introduction to Duran Duran with the uncensored music video of Girls on Film rented from the library. The glorious 80's!

We were so awful to wood paneling and shag carpet, just absolutely exterminated them from modern design, and my childhood misses them so much
