@levelsio so-called journalist to his boss: "what's a good title for our new anti-china piece?" boss: "just use the 'at what cost' template and let's go home, it's getting late"

'At what cost' actually means that some corporation is missing out on profit. Apply it to everywhere and everything.

A pure brainwashed capitalist can’t believe that a country that doesn’t buy into his ideology is succeeding. “At what cost?” is a question you ask when you are trying to maximize profits. The Chinese government is not a company, it’s a leadership.

@bullish_btc Turns out having more capitalism and less socialism in your economy is the best way to get economic growth after all.

You read the article and after describing what happened it says "some experts believe". Everything after that is guaranteed to be some bullshit.

It really is! At what cost means: we're jealous, we can't have these things because all our money goes to billionaires - so we have to find some way to make China look bad.

Economist article, cost was the fishermen lost their jobs (1/5 were retrained; around 200K lost jobs), cities were reshaped and chemicals factories were moved to other parts of the country More dams planned which are very harmful to fish Overall article was positive tho imo

They’ve obviously achieved a lot, but I wouldn’t take CCP numbers and stats as gospel. They bullshit as much as any other government and don’t have a free press to hold them to account

At what cost? 😂 The same cost as corporations like Unilever and Nestle producing 80+% of ALL pollution. While we’re gas lit to use paper straws. If they really wanted sustainability they’d crack down on these companies with supposed “green climate” initiatives. When in reality they haven’t done anything to change operations of their systems.

The whole argument of china is like this: Government mandated stuff is good and it lasts, while the rest is subpar garbage that breaks easily cause contractors skim money and use literal sand instead of concrete on buildings. Lower than middle class are exploited

This brings up a big question that I think a lot of people have to ask: this is a lot of money, and we know that the government is doing good things with the money, but because it's so black box about its finances, when is this going to become a problem for its finances? This brings up an example I share a lot: Senator Ted Stevens tried to build a "bridge to nowhere," and the cost was so high compared to the desired effect that it was later canceled. With the knowledge that local leaders in China only get ahead with better GDPs and more amazing infrastructure work, the fear is that many were trying to make it to Beijing with these types of projects and with the costs hidden to the public, there was no pushback on them. So there is a good sense of questioning when is the gravy train of this money ending? I have had friends come to Beijing asking for more support money and getting rejected about 3 years ago, and with the three red lines, this could be the mean it's ending. But again, how much does China actually have left? Are we going to see China have major issues in the future because of this? I ask that question with no real answer because China is China.

This makes a good point. But also: Why was the Yangtze considered dead? It was a price they paid for their mega projects. As is the exploding debt China will have to deal with. And they certainly didn't eradicate poverty just because their totalitarian leader declared it done.
