The fastest star in the Galaxy is S4714, which accelerates to approximately 24,000 km/s at its peak, or about 8% the speed of light. It orbits the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the center of our Milky Way, moving in an extremely eccentric orbit. At its closest approach, it comes to a distance of approximately 1.8 billion km from the black hole—comparable to the distance from the Sun to Saturn. From this distance, the angular size of the "shadow" of Sagittarius A* is four times larger than the angular size of the Sun in Earth's sky! Observations of S4714, conducted with the European Southern Observatory, are helping to test the effects of general relativity in the extreme gravity of the Galactic center.

Earth orbits the Sun, and the Sun orbits the center of the galaxy... but what is the Milky Way itself orbiting? The Milky Way is not orbiting a single object. Instead, it is moving around a shared center of mass alongside the Andromeda galaxy. While most of the universe is being pushed apart by dark energy, the gravity within our "Local Group" is strong enough to pull these two galaxies toward each other in a slow "cosmic dance." This movement isn't a clean, circular orbit; it is a direct path toward a massive collision and merger that will occur in about 4 to 5 billion years.
