Google has protected topics that only allow whitelisted sources to show up in the results. Google is just a big propaganda machine at this point.

I remember googling shit in the mid 2000s and the search result next pages were endless.

Not an expert, just an autist and amateur coder, That number is most likely just indexing every accessible instance of the search term you use, then filtering them heavily, only showing indexable results such as only clear net items, or could be, you know, software limitations.
