This is such a misleading little video 😂 The “three months” is not how long a new mum is protected from being sacked. It is the deadline for bringing a tribunal claim. And from 1 October that is already increasing to SIX months. Reform wants to make it 12. Fine. More time to bring a claim is useful. But that does not stop your employer dismissing you. It just gives you longer to challenge them afterwards. And Reform also wants to scrap the Equality Act, then promises it will replace the protections women already have with a shiny new Act of its own. So this is basically: “We’ll repeal your existing protections, promise some new ones later, and give you longer to sue if it all goes wrong.” Very reassuring. 😂

Ah, but here’s the bit I want explained. I’m a woman whether I’m pregnant or not. The Equality Act currently protects women from sex discrimination at work regardless of whether they can have children, want children, have finished having them or are menopausal. Menopause related discrimination can also engage age and disability protections. Reform says it will scrap the Equality Act, then replace some of those protections with a new “Women and Motherhood Protection Act”. Their policy says sex discrimination and equal pay will be preserved. Good. So show us the legislation. What happens to women who are infertile, childfree, post menopausal, older, disabled, or discriminated against for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with motherhood? Because women do not cease to require workplace equality once the maternity ward is no longer relevant to them. We are employees, not breeding categories. 😂
