Hard to say if the 90s were awesome or just being a kid was awesome, but I’m pretty sure the answer is both. We had enough to entertain ourselves and connect with others, but not so much that it was overwhelming.

We’d call PBS telethons, trying to guess which cute girl in the background was on the line. Once, we convinced a guy who answered to pass the phone to the girl sitting to his left so we could chat with her, all while watching live. We laughed so hard watching him pass the phone.

And hang around in parked cars eating $1 burgers listening to the Jerky Boys on the old CD player.

Our local access channel had a call in show for all of about two months when I was in junior high. Every day at school, the hot topic would be who had the best prank call the night before.

I used to listen to these radio call-in talk shows at bedtime from my night stand radio. Art Bell, Sally Jesse Rapheal, Loveline Dr. Drew. Every once in awhile a wacko would sneak in. Art Bell was the best at dealing with them; hilarious.
