It’s not spontaneous synchronization. Synchrony is achieved by the counterbalance of the board on the cylinders. Put them directly on the table and they will never achieve synchrony.

There is an avant-garde piece of music entitled "Poème Symphonique", composed by György Ligeti in 1962, That is performed with 100 metronomes set at different speeds. You might enjoy that a lot, although I don't think anyone's going to perform it anytime soon, especially with the move away from mechanical to digital metronomes. The idea was that the piece would play as long as the mechanical wind-up metronomes had power to run. When they all stop ticking, the piece is over.
