Murray recorded the conversation on his iPhone while Jackson was heavily sedated/drugged. Jackson's speech is extremely slurred and slow. Please spare a thought for Michael Ward, who was born on this day (yesterday, sorry Michael!) in Carnmenellis, Cornwall in 1909. Michael was the very first actor I plucked up the courage to contact for an interview, way back in April 1989. He’d recently celebrated his 80’s birthday yet was wheelchair bound, had no family and had basically been forgotten about by the industry. As well as getting my interview we became firm friends and I kind of looked after him for the last eight years of his life. Every Sunday I’d arrive at his flat in Maida Vale and take him to my mum’s place where we’d have lunch and watch videos of some of the films he was in. Apart from the odd television repeat I don’t think he’d really seen himself on TV much and as the memories came flooding back he’d reel off story after story. One of my last memories of Michael happened shortly before he died in 1997. He’d decided to grow a beard and when I saw him I said something along the lines of, ‘My word, you look very distinguished’. ‘Surely you mean extinguished,’ he replied.
