More excellence

When the abundant liars and/or grifters talk about “increased efficiency”due to “AI”, it’s almost entirely increased efficiency in churning out this sort of gruel. Here is a sample, for reference:

The worst example of Microslop is trying to set up a Minecraft account for my child to play on my local server: >Microslop: You need a Microslop account to create a Minecraft account because reasons. >Me: OK. Go to sign up for a Microslop account. >Microslop: You need a unique email to create your Microslop account for your 7 year old because reasons. >Me: Create gmail email for kid (like 5 minutes tops) >Microslop: Oh. That email is for kids, so you can't just create a Microslop account for your child, you need to create a Microslop family account for your child >Me: Create a family account for my child. >Microslop: We sent a 2 step verification password for the FAMILY ACCOUNT (!) to be sent to your child's email because reasons. >Me: I enter the 2 step verification code and it keeps saying it wrong, despite it being the only fucking email my child email account has ever gotten. I was patient; it had nothing to do with lag >Microslop: Try doing this in another browser with cookies disabled. lmao? >Me: Try this in IE, Chrome, Edge Incognito and keeps giving me errors >Microslop: Sorry too many codes have been sent today. Fuck off for 24 hours. Lol >Me: Create a burner email saying my kid is 21 to do this again, and the 2 step verification works first time >Microslop: Great, NOW, do this hold button capcha because reasons. >Me: Do Capcha. Keep getting this error message "NoSuchKeyThe specified key does not exist. No such object: public-sensor-pages/msft/px/captcha_close" >Microslop: LOL. Nothing matters. >Me: I google and find a reddit page that shows me how to do this; basically you can only do this on your phone through the Outlook app without needing this broken capcha because reasons to create a microslop account because reasons. >Me: Get the Microsoft account working and finally install Minecraft for my 7 year old to play with her friends. This took me hours and I am an engineer who works in tech and automation. I can't even fathom how some kids around the world ever get to play Minecraft.

For such an important and influential game, it amounts to a crime, how unnecessarily difficult they’ve made it to actually download and play it.

I abandoned Win in 2004 but I did notice while fighting with Windows8 once that they were forcing users to type instead of using GUI menus... At which point I thought "Isn't reluctance to type into the computer the reason why everyone refuses to use Linux???"

Ryan Fleury's profile picture
Ryan Fleury8 months ago

No. I’ve historically not used Linux because of horrible reliability and UX.

fisharmor's profile picture
fisharmor8 months ago

Reliability cannot be argued as it's running the entire internet - and UX, well that was my point... if you're typing anyway, when you type a command at Linux and it doesn't do what you want it's because *you* didn't do it the way that has worked for the last 50 years.

Ryan Fleury's profile picture
Ryan Fleury8 months ago

You’re right, reliability can’t be argued, because it’s abysmal for consumer desktops and laptops. Horrible GPU driver support, horrible audio support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, sleep, and so on. It has become somewhat better but it’s still a mess.

Jonas's profile picture
Jonas8 months ago

@fisharmor126706 Linux is honestly more reliable than Windows for me. I can use it for weeks at a time without issue, while it feels like I can barely get a day of runtime before Windows decides to break in a new way.

fisharmor's profile picture
fisharmor8 months ago

@rfleury I'll give him that there are still serious irritants. I wish the sleep settings wasn't still an issue, and I wish I didn't have to manually overwrite resolv.conf everytime I connect to a vpn. And I understand why people would call them reliability issues.

Did you try searching mouse or cursor? Why are you trying to give it a sentence to discern what you meant. Yeah, it brought up sound tests when you type tests… I see this as both user and AI being a problem.

It feels really insulting to offer a “Send feedback” button that then sends you through a frustrating, high-friction process just to report a genuine issue.

If you will spin that mouse like that in KDE desktop, it will grow up the cursor (temporarily), to make it easier to spot on the screen... (plus the search for "mouse" will list all settings related, instantly, including "Cursors" which has "Size" option)

Peter Helcmanovsky 🇺🇦's profile picture
Peter Helcmanovsky 🇺🇦8 months ago

yeah, sorry, my comment was more like amusement about that impatient mouse shaking, which I sometimes do myself, but with recent version of KDE it has "consequences" (not annoying, didn't even turn it off, and the kid loves it)

It's trying to redirect you to Bing so you can search for a tutorial on how to use a computer. It's not a bug, it's an ecosystem.

Oh my god. I didn't realize for a moment that it was recommending that string. It feels very aspirational. Some frontend person did a ticket about this. The AI generated UI that presumes the search is AI based. Turns out nobody hooked up the AI search. Or it is a seperate JIRA ticket in the backlog.
