This is One of the things Zuko surpasses Azula in. Because Zuko learnt fire bending and breath techniques from General Iroh, he knew how to fire bend even when he’s frozen. Unlike Azula that’s completely powerless when frozen.

The key factor in these moments is actually Katara TLDR: Zuko and Azula weren’t frozen in the same method and that is the key factor in why she didn’t escape. Zuko was always in a situation where he couldn’t move and that allowed him to escape. Katara locked zuko in a BALL of ice. With oxygen and space to move, he just chose to flex his way out. When he was under water he was able to generate the heat by having the time to build up the heat and push through the ice Azula was COMPLETELY frozen. No ability to move or generate energy at all and fully trapped. She also did not have the time to slowly heat the ice before Katara made her next move, whereas Zuko wasn’t in combat when he was underwater so he had time to This all really comes down to Katara’s experience as a water bender. At the North Pole you could say she recently became a black belt. She knows the moves but didn’t really have the experience with them to know which moves worked in which open best. By the end of the series she’d fought enough fire benders, other benders, and non benders to know which engagement works best for which fighters.

Hey, you notice how he was able to talk in this scene? He wasn't completely frozen like Azula was. He was trapped in a sphere of ice. If Katara was feeling lethal, Zuko would have been frozen in ice and be dead.

Yeah, I think it has something to do with Zuko’s will and drive to get what he wants and will get it for his honor, for his father's approval, for his throne. He has a lot of drive to go through unlike Azula who has everything she wanted compare to Zuko until she lost everything in the end.

True, Iroh’s lessons gave Zuko that quiet inner fire most people never find. But imagine if Azula had ever been shown the same patience instead of constant pressure to be perfect… would her ‘powerless’ moments have looked different, or was she always one missed breath away from breaking? He’s in a much larger and colder body of water, much more energy would be required to heat it to a temp to burn him; Azula was frozen in a smaller and warmer volume of water so even a small amount of fire would burn her… it’s physics 🤷🏾‍♂️ zuko was literally in the North Pole

Always thought Azula's narcissism was her downfall in this fight. In theory she could have gained an upper hand in the ice but it would have caused her injury to catch Katara in a blast. Azula loves her IMAGE above all else, she's incapable of marring her perceived perfection.

This is actually because when she bound Zuko, she covered him in a hollow sphere of ice, wheras she bound Azula with the ice right against her skin. Zuko could move (and therefore bend), while Azula could not. This is Katara learning from her mistakes.

I always wondered if the born prodigy that azula was, if she was taking instead of or with zuko, how much better would she have been with iron as a teacher\ guardian.

Zuko wasn't frozen though, just trapped in a sphere if ice. As long as you can either move or breath, you can firebend. Katara froze Azula solid, so she could do neither.
